About Manny Torres
I have been a self-motivated, energetic baseball player with a positive attitude since the age of four. I attended St. Joseph High School where I played baseball and basketball. I played basketball for Connecticut’s all-time winningest coach, Vito Montelli. My passion and love was devoted to baseball where I was a Connecticut 1994 and 1995 All State Member and 1995 Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year and USA Today Connecticut Player of the Year. The Texas Rangers selected me in the 28th round of the 1995 Amateur Baseball Draft but I chose to attend the University of Alabama on a Baseball Scholarship. I was the first in my family to have the opportunity to attend college, so I chose the college path to chase my dreams of playing in the Major Leagues. During my time at the University of Alabama, I was Freshman and NCWBA All-American, ALL SEC (Southeastern Conference), and made trips to the 1996, 1997, and 1999 College World Series. As a member of the 1996 SEC championship team and 1996, 1997, and 1999 SEC Tournament Champions, I could honestly say these were the best baseball years of my life!! In 2004 I was selected to the All- Jim Wells Team, JimWells is the All-Time Winningest coach in Alabama history. I finished my college career record of 21-4 and when done playing College Baseball in 1999, I signed as a Free Agent with the Cincinnati Reds. However, tearing my labrum for a second time in less than 3 years made me find a new passion in life, thus the following experiences working with youth and teaching the sport I have played for over 25 years—baseball!!!
Currently I am owner of Technique Sports Training and Director of Technique Tigers Future Stars Baseball Academy where I have instructed and guided over 400 area youth in private baseball lessons, baseball academies, camps, clinics, and group workouts throughout the year. The Technique Tigers Future Stars Baseball program has over 200 active members from ages 6-18 and in 2009 had a total of 19 teams!
I have also done the following in the last six years, every job involved kids such as
- Member, Bridgeport Board of Education
- Paraprofessional, Bridgeport Learning Center
- Mental Health Worker, Boys and Girls Village
- Juvenile Detention Officer, Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center
- Physical Education Teacher
- Athletic Director for an Elementary School
My coaching experience has been what has made me have the success in building a program for kids over the last five years, programs that I coached in the past are Greens Farms Academy, Fairfield American Legion, Bridgeport Metros, St. Joseph High School, Trumbull Jr. American Legion, Central High School, Trumbull Hawks Travel Baseball Program, TNT Baseball Academy, Positive U Baseball Academy and currently Technique Future Stars Baseball Academy.
As you can see, I have chosen a field for the right reasons. I am very passionate about working with area youth, it is simply the one and only career I can now see myself doing. I am a strong leader and great role model who has the ability to responsibly direct today’s youth. I keep it simple, fun, and structured. My rules are, LISTEN at all times to your coaches, teachers, elders, anybody who is trying to help you, GIVE EFFORT at all time, try your best everyday, and last but not the least RESPECT yourself, parents, coaches, teammates, THE GAME!
